Manage : Files and Applications
Once you have created a backup job, you can modify its settings using the Manage screen's Edit option. This allows you to change selections that were made when the job was created. There are also options that are not available when you create a backup job.
To modify a backup job:
- Select BackupAssist's Backup tab
- Select Manage Backup Jobs
- Select the backup job that you want to change.
- Select Edit from the top menu
- Select the part of the job you want to change from the list on the left
- Once you have made the required changes, select Apply changes
There are 8 common options in the list, similar to the steps completed during the back job creation. There is also a option specific to each backup type.
Files and applications
The File and applications section shows all drives connected to the computer as well as local VSS applications, such as Exchange and SQL. You can select or deselect the files and applications you want to back up.
Below is an list of the sections and options available. What you see in BackupAssist will depend on the backup job's current settings.
Use the tick-boxes to the left of any drives, folders and applications that you want to backup. For System Protection backup jobs, full volume backups are recommended and required for some selections.
System Protection
Application and volume selections cannot be deselected unless Back up selected items only is selected. This option will allow you to deselect Critical Volumes and select specific VSS applications and drives. You can only select specific data within a drive (e.g. C:) if BackupAssist is on Windows Server and the destination is a removable disk.
Complete VSS applications
VSS applications be selected or deselected without you having to manually choose the individual files used by that application. You can expand any application and choose individual components. For example, individual databases, storage groups and guests.
Select Refresh if a drive has been connected while BackupAssist is running and the drive does not appear. If a VSS application like SQL or Exchange is not listed, try re-starting the application and then click Refresh.
This option allows you to remove selected drives or folders that are no longer present but were not deselected beforehand. The backup job will try to back them up even though they are no longer available.
Check selections does not work for VSS applications like SQL Server and Exchange Server.
To remove a drive or folder:
- Select Check selections to open the Remove deleted selections dialog.
- Select the drives or folders from the list.
- Select Remove.
- Select OK.
If you want to back up data that is not on the internal, attached or mapped drives, you can add network paths to back up from. It is recommended that you log in using the Backup User Identity when defining a network path.
This option is available for File Protection and File Archiving backups.
The new network path will be displayed in the remote file selection list.
To add a network path
- Select Add network path to open the dialog.
- Enter the network path directly or Browse for it in My Network Places. Network paths must be entered in the form \\Servername\Sharename For example \\SBS-SERVER\accountdata).
- Click OK.
BackupAssist will attempt to connect to the network path using the Backup User Identity's username and password. If the Backup User Identity cannot access the network path, you will be asked to supply a different username and password.
Estimating size of selections
You can estimate the total size of your selected files and applications to ensure that your backup destination is able to accommodate the volume of data selected for backup.
Drives and folders will appear with different colored icons depending on how they have been selected. Click Key at the top-right of the window to learn the color differences and their meanings.
The following three colors are used for the folders.
Green: Fully selected
The entire drive / folder is backed up, including all sub-folders and files.
Purple: Partially selected, new items are included
All sub-folders and files selected are backed up, as well as any sub-folders or files that are created in the future.
Blue: Partially selected, new items not included
Only sub-folders and files selected are backed up. No new files or folders created in the future will be backed up.
You can configure BackupAssist to exclude types of files, such as unimportant audio or image files, that waste storage space and time. Rather than deselecting each file, you can define file type exclusions so that only important data is backed up.
Considerations
- File exclusions are not available for System Protection backups.
- Exclusions can only be added after the backup job has been created.
- The exclusions you add, only apply to the job you are currently editing.
Exclusion tab options
- Click Add to exclude a type of file. A new dialog box will appear.
- Enter the file type you wish to exclude in the form *.extension (eg. *.wav).
- Input the path where the exclusion should be applied either directly or Browse for it (i.e. you may only want to exclude all *.wav files from a specific drive or folder).
- Check Apply this exclusion to all subfolders if you want to exclude the file type in all folders below the path the exclusion is applied to.
- Click OK to add the exclusion to the list or Cancel to cancel creating the new exclusion.
- Click Edit to modify a previously defined exclusion.
- Click Delete to remove a previously defined exclusion.
The Hyper-V CSV Options step will only appear if you have a CSV environment. This is used to configure an intermediate backup location, called a staging disk.
A staging disk is used to put the Hyper-V host and its guests into a single image backup (VHD file), even if they are on different volumes.
Hyper-V CSV staging disk considerations:
- The intermediate backup’s location must be a local disk.
- The intermediate backup’s disk is overwritten each time a backup is run.
- The image backup is taken from the whole staging disk.
- The staging drives and the backup destination shown are based on the selections made during the Set up destination step.
Note: The entire contents of the staging disk will imaged to the backup destination each time the backup is run. Check that the disk is both appropriate and prepared for this step. For more information, refer to the Backing up a CSV environment section of this user guide.

The Exchange Granular Restore console can restore individual mail items into a live Exchange Server using a backup of the Exchange Server’s database (EDB).
If Exchange is installed on a Hyper-V guest, BackupAssist will need to be able to look inside the guest to identify the Exchange Server and its database. To do this, your backup job will require the username and password of any Hype-V guest that is running Exchange.
These credentials are used for all Hyper-V guests within the backup. For this reason, each Hyper-V guest running Exchange should be set up with the same username and password.
